Pasta with the Marcos

When Julie Marco messaged me about doing another session, of course I was beyond thrilled. She and David are fantastic to work with; I’d done a home session with them a couple years ago, with the goal of Christmas cards with their three Belgian Malinois. This time, Julie’s 80-year-old parents were visiting and she wanted a story session to document a little bit of their time together. I asked if there was anything in particular the family likes to do together, or anything specific images she wanted. “I could make some pasta and we cold all be feeding it to each other?,” she said. Oh! great! I think a meal is a great idea, we’ll make that part of it. “No, us to feed each other pasta … with our hands.” I thought she was joking, but you never know, so I had to play it cool. “I’m not kidding.” At that point, I knew I couldn’t possibly love Julie Marco any more. YES. I would absolutely love to capture you feeding your 80-year-old parents pasta.

So, we had an epic session! So fun. It started out in the sitting room with some happy hour drinks, then they went outside for a walk down the boardwalk and some photos on the front steps, then back inside for some pasta feeding in the kitchen and sit-down eating. I also wanted to make sure we made some nice images of Julie and her parents—them chatting and the way they look at each other—they sat on the couch together and I learned a little bit about Julie through her parents’ eyes. How someone looks at us can be etched in our brains, how their eyes glint, their soft smile, the wrinkles around their eyes—everything we love about them in that look. I always try to make that photo for my clients, whether it be how their dog looks at them, their partner, their kids, or their parents. It can be the most important photo ever.
